Lewis Hamilton took the fastest lap of the second session on Friday in Budapest with a best time that was two-tenths faster than his nearest challenger, on this occasion Nelson Piquet. This was achieved on super-soft tyres, but the feeling was that when on the same tyres as the other frontrunners the result would be rather different. Piquet spun at the end of the session. Heikki Kovalainen was second quickest in his McLaren. Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest in his Renault while the two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were fifth and sixth. The BMW Saubers were next with Nick Heidfeld ahead of Robert Kubica, while the top 10 was completed by Jarno Trulli and Nico Rosberg in the Williams-Toyota.

Timo Glock was 11th ahead of the two Red Bulls of Mark Webber and David Coulthard while Kazuki Nakajima was next up, despite the Japanese driver having a spin and a nudge with the wall. Fifteenth overall was Sebastien Bourdais ahead of Jenson Button, Giancarlo Fisichella, Adrian Sutil, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel, who had another mechanical failure.
