Practice 1 Report - Kubica leads the way

Robert Kubica set the fastest time of the first session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, although tyres were obviously an issue. The Pole had the softer of the tyre choices on his car while most of the others were using the harder tyres and it remains to be seen whether Kubica can sustain that kind of pace on longer runs. It was, however, a nice publicity stunt for the BMW team.

The fight behind him was the usual story with the two Ferraris and the two McLarens all very close. All four cars were covered by a one and a half tenths with Felipe Massa fastest on this occasion ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. There was then a gap of three-tenths back to Nick Heidfeld in the second of the BMWs ahead of Nico Rosberg's Williams-Toyota and the two Hondas of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

Ralf Schumacher completed the top 10 in his factory Toyota, ahead of Anthony Davidson (Super Aguri), Jarno Trulli (Toyota) and Alexander Wurz (Williams-Toyota).

It was not a great session for Red Bull with David Coulthard 14th ahead of the Renault of Heikki Kovalainen, Sebastian Vettel's Scuderia Toro Rosso, Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault, Tonio Liuzzi's Toro Rosso, Takuma Sato (Super Aguri) and Mark Webber (Red Bull), who suffered a mechanical problem and the two Spykers, with Adrian Sutil 1.8secs ahead of new boy Sakon Yamamoto.
