Heikki Kovalainen set the fastest time of the Saturday morning session in sunny but windy conditions at Hockenheim. The Finn was just as fraction of a second ahead of Felipe Massa, the Brazilian using intermediate tyres while the McLaren was on the softer rubber. The big question is whether or not Ferrari will stay on the harder tyres for qualifying, which would help McLaren do well in qualifying but might play into Ferrari's hands in the race.

The other times are less easy to gauge with Fernando Alonso third, just a tenth behind the two leading players and Sebastian Vettel fourth for Scuderia Toro Rosso. Jarno Trulli was fifth in his Toyota ahead of Nelson Piquet, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button.

David Coulthard was 11th with Kazuki Nakajima, Timo Glock, Sebastien Bourdais and Nick Heidfeld next up. At the back were Adrian Sutil (who had a big slide off the track at one point), Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Robert Kubica, who stopped early with a mechanical problem.
