Alex Wurz set the fastest time of the first practice at Hockenheim with a best lap of 1m16.349s in his Williams-Cosworth FW28. Unfortunately for Williams Nico Rosberg had an incident at the first corner and damaged his car. There were a number of incidents during the session with drivers struggling to come to grips with the slippery track. Red Bull's Robert Doornbos had two spins and others went off but the only real damage was to Rosberg's car.

Behind Wurz there was Anthony Davidson, two-tenths of a second behind and eight-tenths quicker than BMW test driver Robert Kubica. Honda looked good in the session with Jenson Button fifth and Barrichello seventh, the pair being split by Doornbos's Red Bull. The top 10 was completed by Fernando Alonso, Toro Rosso's Neel Jani, Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard.

Markus Winkelhock did a good job to be 11th in his Midland but the times should not be taken too seriously as Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Pedro de la Rosa and Kimi Raikkonen only did installation laps, while Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa and Mark Webber did no laps at all.
