Alexander Wurz set the fastest time of the first session of practice for the German Grand Prix at a cloudy Hockenheim. The McLaren-Mercedes test driver was sixth-tenth of a second clear of Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta. The Brazilian was eight-tenths clear of the fastest of the race drivers, as usual Kimi Raikkonen in his McLaren-Mercedes, the man who is favourite to win the German event. Kimi was two-tenths ahead of Jenson's BAR-Honda and he in turn was a tenth faster than Juan Pablo Montoya in the second McLaren. There was then a gap of three-tenths of a second back to local hero Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello in the two Ferraris.

Eighth fastest was Red Bull Racing's Tonio Liuzzi ahead of Takuma Sato and Ralf Schumacher's Toyota.

The big disappointment once again was BMW Williams with Nick Heidfeld 15th and Mark Webber 16th.

The two Renaults of Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso did not set any times.
