Lewis Hamilton went quickest in FP2 in his Mercedes, but the team did not dominate FP2 as it did FP1 thanks to Nico Rosberg flubbing his fastest lap and ending up back in fifth behind Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari), Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari).

The ambient temperature at the start of the 90-minute session was 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Centigrade) and the track temperature was 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Centigrade). There was 0 percent chance of rain.

The line-up for the weekend was: Mercedes - Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Red Bull Renault - Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat. Williams Mercedes - Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari - Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. McLaren Honda - Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button. Force India Mercedes - Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez. Toro Rosso Renault - Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz. Lotus Mercedes - Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado. Marussia Ferrari - Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi. Sauber - Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr.

Merhi and Stevens were the first out on the track. They also clocked the first lap times. Stevens got down to a 1:44.564, which stood as the fastest until 7 minutes into the session when Raikkonen turned a 1:40.103.

7 minutes into the session, Vettel spun and continued at Turn 4.

13 minutes into the session, Hamilton did his first flying lap, a slow 1:50.643. His next tour, however, clocked in at 1:39.058.

31 minutes into the session, Raikkonen blasted around on the soft Pirellis to set a 1:37.662.

34 minutes into the session, Rosberg, on softs, did a lap of 1:38.399 after sliding wide in the last corner. Vettel then crossed the line to set a 1:38.339.

Now it was Hamilton's turn on the softs. He set a 1:37.219.

36 minutes into the session, Massa went off at Turn 14 and hit the barrier. That brought out the red flags.

43 minutes into the session, the green lights came on.

The top six were: Hamilton, Raikkonen, Vettel, Rosberg, Ericsson and Bottas.

With 43 minutes remaining in the session, Ricciardo got into the top 10, but was slowly pushed downwards as other drives did their runs of the soft tyres.

With 38 minutes remaining in the session, Bottas moved into sixth.

With 35 minutes remaining in the session, Ricciardo snatched third place with a time of 1:38.311.

That was it for the runs on the new soft tires.

The top 10 were: Hamilton, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Vettel, Rosberg, Kvyat, Bottas, Nasr, Grosjean and Button.

With 20 minutes remaining in the session, Kvyat radioed in that his car was smoking, and the team told him to bring it back to the pits slowly. But his brakes failed and he had to park the car at Turn 14.

In the final part of the session the drivers and teams worked on long runs using both types of tires. The top 10 remained unchanged.
