Michael Schumacher set the fastest time of a damp morning session on Saturday in Shanghai. The track was drying as the session went on and in the scramble at the end of the session there was plenty of action, including an off for Michael himself. Second fastest was his title rival Fernando Alonso with Honda's Jenson Button next up. The big surprise of the session was the speed of the two Toro Rossos of Tonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed which were fourth and fifth fastest. Mark Webber was sixth ahead of Christijan Albers's MF1, Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault and Pedro de la Rosa's McLaren with David Coulthard 10th in his Red Bull.

In the course of those exciting last few laps Kimi Raikkonen had two spins, and there were offs for Robert Doornbos, Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Massa and Sakon Yamamoto but without any serious damage.
