Alexander Wurz led the way in the first practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix although 11 of the 24 regular drivers did not set a representative time, preferring to keep their engines fresh. Wurz's Williams was a few hundredths faster than Anthony Davidson's Honda, appearing from the weekend in 555 blue and yellow rather than the usual Lucky Strike red and white. Jenson Button was third fastest in his Honda but the lap time was 1.4secs slower than Davidson, an indication that the times should not be taken too seriously. Michael Schumacher was fourth fastest in his Ferrari half a second behind Button with Scuderia Toro Rosso test driver Neel Jani next ahead of Spyker MF1's test driver for the weekend Alexandre Premat. BMW's Sebastian Vettel was next ahead of his team mate Robert Kubica with the top 10 completed by Michael Ammermuller, the new Red Bull test driver, and Felipe Massa.

Kimi Raikkonen had a spin as did Ammermuller but otherwise there was little incident.
