Practice 2 Report - Ruined

Rain ruined the last 60 minutes of Free Practice 2 in Montreal, but in the first 30 minutes Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest time in the dry in his Mercedes. He also provided some ill-fated entertainment when he later crashed in the rain.

The ambient temperature at the start of the 90-minute session was 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Centigrade) and the track temperature was 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Centigrade). The chance of rain was 70 percent.

The line-up for the weekend was: Mercedes - Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Red Bull Renault - Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat. Williams Mercedes - Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari - Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. McLaren Honda - Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Force India Mercedes - Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez. Toro Rosso Renault - Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz. Lotus Mercedes - Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado. Marussia Ferrari - Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi. Sauber - Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr.

Vettel and Rosberg lined up to be the first out on track. Vettel set the first time: 1:21.885. He was on the super soft Pirellis with the red sidewalls, and he soon lowered this time to a 1:16.534. Raikkonen claimed second with a 1:16.868. They then got those times down to 1:16.304 and 1:16.310.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes drivers were running on the soft compound tires, but Hamilton soon pitted for a set of the super softs.

15 minutes into the session, the top six were: Vettel, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Kvyat and Ricciardo.

16 minutes into the session, Hamilton went on top with a 1:15.988. Rain was on the way and expected in the next 15 minutes.

20 minutes into the session, Grosjean moved up to fifth.

25 minutes into the session, it was now Maldonado's chance to grab fifth place.

30 minutes into the session, the forecasts now predicted rain in five minutes.

32 minutes into the session, Rosberg was on track on the super softs but pitted.

35 minutes into the session, it began to rain lightly on some parts of the circuit including Turn 8. All the drivers headed back to the pits and their dry garages.

The top 10 were: Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Maldonado, Bottas, Grosjean, Massa, Kvyat and Ricciardo.

With no rain forecast for Saturday or Sunday, there was not a lot of incentive for the drivers to go out on the wet track and risk damaging their cars.

Yet, 42 minutes into the session, Hamilton and Rosberg ventured forth on intermediate rain tires just as rain really began to fall heavily.

49 minutes into the session, the red flags came out as Hamilton had aquaplaned off and nudged the tire barriers at the Turn 10 hairpin.

With 30 minutes remaining, FP2 was restarted. And it really began to rain, which flooded the track and washed out the rest of the session.

The top 10 at the end of FP2 remained: Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Maldonado, Bottas, Grosjean, Massa, Kvyat and Ricciardo.
