Practice 2 Report - Hamilton still on top in Canada

Lewis Hamilton (1:15.259) reinforced his Canadian GP form with fastest lap in the second session of free practice for Sunday's Canadian GP.

Hamilton showed strong one-lap pace and good longer run speed as McLaren team mate Jenson Button, having missed most of the first session, sat out most of the second as well. With a new gearbox, Button emerged for the last 20 minutes of the session and ended up ninth quickest (1:15.812).

Ferrari, with revised exhaust layouts on both cars, look stronger, with Fernando Alonso (1:15.313) finishing the session second quickest and team mate Felipe Massa third (1:15.410).

Although Montreal success had thus far eluded Red Bull Racing, Sebastian Vettel came within half a lap of winning in 2011 and looks like being a factor again. The double champion ended the session fourth quickest (1:15.531) on the prime tyre, which suggests that he could be in the pole position battle.

Paul Di Resta's Force India (1:15.544) was a competitive fifth, a moment at Turn 1 betraying how hard the Scot was pushing, with Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber (1:15.651) and Michael Schumacher's Mercedes (1:15.697), on the Pirelli prime, making it six different chassis in the first seven.

Nico Hulkenberg (1:15.799) put the second Force India squarely into the top 10, which was completed by Button and Nico Rosberg's Mercedes (1:15.878).

Caterham got Heikki Kovalainen out 35 minutes into the session after his red flag incident in the morning. It was Bruno Senna's turn to interrupt the action in the afternoon, when the Williams became the latest victim of the so-called 'world champions' wall' 50 minutes into the session.
