Canadian GP, 1984
Patrick Tambay was out of action after his leg-breaking crash in Monaco but Renault decided not to replace him in Canada. The field was as normal except that Huub Rothengatter had taken over the Spirit-Hart from Mauro Baldi and Mike Thackwell was driving a RAM in place of Jonathan Palmer who had decided to race at Le Mans instead. Corrado Fabi remained in the second Brabham, Teo racing in CART.
After a series of frustrating races things were looking better for Nelson Piquet was he took pole position in his Michelin-tired Brabham-BMW ahead of Alain Prost's (McLaren-TAG) and the first Goodyear runner Elio de Angelis (Lotus-Renault). Derek Warwick was fourth in his Renault ahead of the two Ferraris of Rene Arnoux and Michele Alboreto. Then came Nigel Mansell (Lotus-Renault), Niki Lauda (McLaren-TAG), Ayrton Senna (Toleman-Hart) and Andrea de Cesaris (Ligier-Renault).
In the race Piquet went into the lead despite Prost getting a better start and the Brazilian then led from flag to flag. Prost chased while Lauda worked his way through to run third until lap 44 when he went ahead of Prost. The order then stayed unchanged to the finish. Fourth place went to de Angelis, fifth to Arnoux and sixth to Mansell.
