British Grand Prix Preview

RACE DATE: 11 JULY 2004
LOCATION: SILVERSTONE, ENGLAND
2003 WINNER: BARRICHELLO

A wartime airfield, Silverstone was the first post-war home of the British Grand Prix from 1948. Flat, fast and sweeping for its first 40 years, Keke Rosberg recording the only F1 lap to average over 160mph in qualifying for the 1985 race. Subsequent landscaping for safety and commercial reasons have seen man-made gradients, a 'stadium' section and the slowing of all the corners but the Maggots/Becketts S and Bridge bends remain daunting challenges. Criticised in 2000 for sub-standard facilities and infrastructure it remains a classic venue despite the vagaries of the English weather.
