The first session of free practice for the Belgian GP saw typical Spa weather, with intermittent torrential rain amid a 90-minute session that saw the track surface wet throughout.

The forecast for the weekend is for the inclement weather to continue with every possibility of wet conditions for both Saturday qualifying and Sunday's race.

Fernando Alonso's Ferrari (2:00.79) set the quickest time, ahead of Lewis Hamilton's McLaren (2:01.56) and Robert Kubica's Renault (2:02.07).

Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull (2:02.44) was fourth quickest, with wet weather specialist Adrian Sutil putting the first Force India fifth (2:02.63). The team is confident of another strong display, if not quite a pole and a credible challenge for outright victory, as last year.

Jenson Button's McLaren (2:02.90) finished the session sixth, with championship leader Mark Webber a hundredth of a second slower. Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber (2:03.39) finished up eighth, ahead of 300 race man Rubens Barrichello (2:03.41) and Michael Schumacher (2:03.48).
