Practice 1 Report - Russell leads Mercedes charge in Spain
George Russell bounced back from a difficult Monaco weekend by setting the pace in first practice for the Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, leading a competitive field headed by Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc.
The Mercedes driver posted a best lap of 1m16.363s during the hottest part of Friday afternoon running finishing 0.203s clear of McLaren’s Piastri. Ferrari’s heavily updated SF-26 showed encouraging signs as Leclerc secured third, 0.520s adrift of Russell, while Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull.
With ambient temperatures high and teams evaluating upgrade packages ahead of a crucial phase of the championship, the opening session featured a mix of race preparation and qualifying simulations. Russell first moved to the top with a 1m17.353s effort on medium tyres before Verstappen briefly displaced him on softs with a 1m17.047s.
The decisive moment came around the halfway mark when Russell extracted significantly more performance from his Mercedes, lowering the benchmark to 1m16.363s. No rival was able to improve beyond that figure despite several late qualifying-style runs.
Piastri continued McLaren’s strong form by finishing second, while Leclerc’s third place offered encouragement for Ferrari after introducing a substantial package that included a revised front wing and floor. Verstappen ended the session fourth after reporting a difficult balance that alternated between understeer and oversteer.
Barcelona’s traditional role as a testing ground for young talent was evident throughout the session. McLaren reserve Leonardo Fornaroli impressed in Lando Norris’ car to finish fifth, while Audi stand-in Paul Aron was sixth. Liam Lawson placed seventh for Racing Bulls ahead of Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic, who drove Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari. Arvid Lindblad and Alpine driver Franco Colapinto completed the top ten.
Several other rookies were also in action. Ayumu Iwasa substituted for Isack Hadjar at Red Bull and finished 14th, while Frederik Vesti was 15th after taking over championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes. Cadillac gave American driver Colton Herta his first official Formula 1 practice appearance, with the Californian ending the session 21st.
Williams reserve Luke Browning was unable to set a lap time after suspected electrical problems prevented him from running Alex Albon’s FW48.
Final lap times were: Russell 1m16.363s, Piastri 1m16.566s, Leclerc 1m16.883s, Verstappen 1m17.047s, Fornaroli 1m17.216s, Aron 1m17.321s, Lawson 1m17.472s, Beganovic 1m17.778s, Lindblad 1m17.804s, Colapinto 1m17.893s, Bearman 1m18.172s, Bortoleto 1m18.209s, Sainz 1m18.293s, Iwasa 1m18.298s, Vesti 1m18.365s, Ocon 1m18.372s, Gasly 1m18.508s, Bottas 1m18.914s, Alonso 1m20.067s, Stroll 1m20.318s and Herta 1m20.697s.
