Nazir Hoosein

Hoosein started racing and rallying in 1968, while also running a garage and a cinema. In time he also built up a successful film distribution company. He also became involved in the organization of the Himalayan rally - run through the world's highest mountains in the north of India. In 1980 Hoosein founded the Himalayan Rally Association which ran the rally of that name and, increasingly unhappy with the way the sport was being run in India, he was the founding president of the Indian Automotive Racing Club and then played an important role in the formation of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) of which he became the president in 1984. Even before that he had represented India in FISA - the international motor sports federation. When Max Mosley came to power he promised non-European countries a bigger say in the running of the sport and Hoosein was one of the men chosen to help make the FIA a more international organization. He was elected to the World Motor Sports Council in 1993 and became a regular F1 steward although the chaotic race at Silverstone in 1998 resulted in him standing down from the job for a year.
