Salo to join Tyrrell

TYRRELL will shortly announce that Finnish rising star Mika Salo is to join Ukyo Katayama this season. Salo has spent the last few years exiled in Japanese racing, but was a strong contender to Mika Hakkinen in the 1990 British F3 Championship. Salo made his F1 debut last year with the now-defunct Lotus team.

Before making its decision, Tyrrell tested Salo alongside British Touring Car Champion and former F1 man Gabriele Tarquini; and ex-Williams test driver Emmanuel Collard. The team also had talks with Christian Fittipaldi, Erik Comas and Karl Wendlinger. Tarquini is expected to stay in touring car racing with Alfa Romeo, but Collard is still looking for an F1 ride. The former World Karting Champion has around 40OOkm of testing for Williams under his belt and is thus an attractive proposition for some of F1's smaller teams - if he can find a budget. His name has been linked with Larrousse and with Pacific.
