Dutch GP 1984
Dutch GP, 1984
There was only a week between the Austrian and Dutch GPs and the only change to the entry was that ATS reverted to one car. Qualifying saw Alain Prost (overtaken in the World Championship in Austria by Niki Lauda) taking pole position in his McLaren-TAG. Then came Nelson Piquet (Brabham-BMW), Elio de Angelis (Lotus-Renault), the two Renaults of Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay and Lauda's McLaren. The top was completed by the two Williams-Hondas of Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite, Michele Alboreto's Ferrari and Teo Fabi in the second Brabham-BMW. On race morning Zandvoort's aging facilities were highlighted when a walkway above the pits collapsed and several people were injured as they fell or were hit by the falling girders. Later in the morning it was announced that Ayrton Senna had signed to drive for Team Lotus. Toleman pointed out that the Brazilian was under contract to them and both Lotus drivers wondered about their future. At the start of the race Piquet powered ahead of Prost with Tambay third, de Angelis fourth and Rosberg fifth. Then came Warwick, Laffite, Alboreto and a slow-starting Lauda. Rosberg was the man on the move in the early laps and he quickly passed de Angelis and Tambay to get to third place. Lauda too was on the move and on the ninth lap had moved up to fourth place. On the next lap Piquet went out with engine failure and so Prost led Rosberg and Lauda but a lap later Lauda was ahead of the Williams. The order then stayed the same until the closing laps when Nigel Mansell (Lotus-Renault) charged up to pass de Angelis and then Rosberg. He finished third with his team mate behind him, Fabi fifth and Tambay sixth.
