In the hands of JJ Lehto and Karl Wendlinger the Sauber cars were quite competitive in 1993, scoring 12 points and at the end of the year Mercedes decided to put its own name on the engines. The Sauber Petronas engines introduced in the late 1990s were based on Ferrari V10s.
