Officially Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula 1 racing at the end of 1985 but the company's V8 turbo engines continued to be supplied to the Osella team in 1986 and 1987. The team was not a great success and so in 1988 Alfa Romeo insisted that the name of the engines should be changed. They became known as Osella V8s and were driven in 10 Grands Prix by Nicola Larini.

At the end of the year the team switched to Ford engines.
