Eliseo Salazar

A cheerful Chilean who tried Formula 3 in 1979 before contesting the British national Formula 1 Championship the following year in a Williams FW07. His intermittent Formula 1 career continued with the March team in 1981, but he switched midseason to Ensign for whom he finished sixth in that year's Dutch Grand Prix. He drove for ATS in 1982 where he became famous for being thumped by Nelson Piquet - in an incident televised worldwide - after the two collided in the German Grand Prix. Thereafter he raced sports cars for many years before turning his hand to Champcars. Currently he still contests Indy Racing League events and is particularly adept on the high speed ovals. He suffered a bad accident in 2002 and suffered chest injuries and has since switched to the American Le Mans Series
