Julian Bailey

Although he was born in Britain, Bailey was brought up in Spain and he became an accomplished Formula Ford 1600 racer in Britain, winning the important Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. He struggled to find a budget to compete in Formula 3 but in the middle of 1986 he convinced Cavendish Finance and Braemar to support him and entered Formula 3000 in a GA Motorsport Lola. He won his third F3000 race, the first British driver to win a race in the formula. This attracted the attention of Ken Tyrrell and he was recruited to drive for the Surrey-based Formula 1 team the following year, mortgaging himself up to the hilt to pay for the privilege.Unfortunately the Tyrrell 017 was an uncompetitive car and his promise was squandered, never scoring a Championship point. In 1989 he joined the Nissan factory sportscar team and stayed for two seasons and then tried to get back into F1 at the start of 1991, raising finance to buy his drive in the second works Lotus 102B for the first four races of the season. He finished sixth in the San Marino Grand Prix, but did not retain his drive after Monaco. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career in sportscars and touring car racing.
