Andy Le Fleming

Andy Le Fleming studied mechanical engineering at King's College of the University of London, being sponsored through the course by the Ford Motor Company. He tried the car industry during his college vacations and realized that it was too dull for him and so began looking to racing as a more exciting career. He wrote letters to all the major racing teams in Britain and was hired as a design engineer by Geoff Ferris of Penske Cars in Poole, Dorset. His early years were thus spent working on Indycars under Ferris, and then his replacement Alan Jenkins.

When Roger Penske decided to give up building his own cars for a while and concentrate on running customer chassis, Le Fleming found a job working with John Barnard's Ferrari GTO operation in Guildford, designing parts for F1 Ferraris. He stayed with Barnard when John moved across to Benetton and, in addition to his designing work, he began to work as a race engineer with Roberto Moreno and later with Michael Schumacher.

When Barnard departed from the operation Le Fleming moved to Tyrrell to work with his former Ferrari colleague Mike Coughlan before being asked to rejoin Jenkins with the Footwork team.

In 1993 Le Fleming went back to Ferrari when John Barnard opened a new technical center called Ferrari Design and Development, and he worked as a designer and a race engineer with the Italian team until he rejoined Jenkins at Stewart at the start of 1997 as chief engineer and as a designer. He stayed with the team in that role until after the Jaguar takeover of the team but at the end of the 2000 season he moved on to reappear later at Prost. When Prost closed down Le Fleming decided to take some time out of the sport but has since returned to work as a designer at McLaren.
