Paul Frere

Still lean, athletic and urbane, Frere raced on a semiprofessional basis for 15 years, yet this was essentially as an adjunct to his profession as a talented and respected international motoring journalist. His racing career really took off when he won the non-title 1952 Grand Prix des Frontieres on the Chimay road circuit at the wheel of an HWM after which he briefly graduated to the Ferrari Formula 1 team. A second place to Peter Collins in a Lancia-Ferrari in the 1956 Belgian Grand Prix was followed four years later by a superb victory at Le Mans, sharing a Ferrari 250TR with compatriot Olivier Gendebien. Even into his seventies, Frere continued to be entrusted with some of the fastest road cars in the world for analysis and assessment.
