Macau
The only major motor race outside Japan which flourished in the 1980s and 1990s was the Macau Grand Prix. The race around the 3.8-mile Guia street circuit in the tiny Portuguese enclave, close to Hong King, developed because of a rivalry between two local businessmen - who were both passionate about about motor racing. Teddy Yip and Bob Harper had the ambition and the money to run racing teams in Europe and America and organized Formula Libre races from 1970 onwards. When the rules switched to Formula Atlantic regulations there was an influx of drivers from Australia, notably Vern Schuppan - who twice won the event - and then in 1977 the Europeans came in increasing numbers with Riccardo Patrese and Geoff Lees both winning the race on two occasions. But it was the switch to Formula 3 rules in 1983 which really put Macau on the map with the first race being dominated by a young driver called Ayrton Senna, who defeated sometime Formula 1 driver Roberto Guerrero and another youngster Gerhard Berger.
