Race Notes - Hamilton takes two in a row

Lewis Hamilton won the United States Grand Prix in Indianapolis taking his second career victory in a week in his McLaren-Mercedes, followed by his team mate Fernando Alonso in second place, with Felipe Massa in the Ferrari finishing third.

Massa's Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen finished right behind in fourth place, Heikki Kovalainen in the Renault was fifth, Jarno Trulli in the Toyota was sixth, Mark Webber in the Red Bull-Renault was seventh and Sebastian Vettel in the BMW in his first Grand Prix finished in eighth to take a point on his debut.

At the start Hamilton led Alonso and Massa, while further back there was contact when Ralf Schumacher understeered into the cars of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello, putting them all out of the race. Later in the lap Fisichella spun, rejoining at the back.

At lap 10 the order was Hamilton leading Alonso by 2.2 seconds, followed by Massa, Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Raikkonen, Trulli, Webber, Rosberg and Vettel in tenth.

On lap 14 Takuma Sato spins into the gravel trap and retires.

On lap 20 Heidfeld went straight at the first corner, crossing the grass and rejoining, losing a spot to Kovalainen.

On lap 21 Hamilton, Massa and Heidfeld were the first to stop in the pitlane followed by Alonso a lap later, Raikkonen and Vettel on lap 24.

On lap 24 Fisichella, working his way up from the back, passes Wurz for 12th place, the two buming wheels, the next lap Button passing Speed for 15th.

On lap 26 Kovalainen pits handing the lead back to Hamilton, while Raikkonen passed Heidfeld into the first corner for 8th place.

On lap 29 Fisichella forces a outside pass on Liuzzi for 11th place, Webber pitting on lap 30, followed by Trulli on lap 31.

During the second stint Alonso was slowly closing the gap on Hamilton to within 0.6 seconds on lap 33.

At half distance the order was Hamilton leading Alonso, followed 13.5 seconds further behind by Massa, Rosberg on a one-stop strategy, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Trulli, Webber and Vettel in tenth.

On lap 37 Fisichella and Speed made their first stops.

On lap 38 Alonso drew side-by-side on the outside with Hamilton on the front straight, but could not get past his team mate.

On lap 40 Rosberg made his stop from fourth place, the team having trouble removing the fuel hose and losing several seconds.

On lap 44 Wurz and Button were the last to make their first pitstops.

At lap 45 the order was Hamilton 1.1 seconds ahead of Alonso, followed by Massa, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Trulli, Webber, Vettel and Rosberg in tenth.

On lap 47 Kovalainen was the first to make his second stop from 6th place, followed by Heidfeld from fifth a lap later.

On lap 50 Alonso made his second stop, followed by the leader Hamilton, Raikkonen, and Vettel a lap later the order, followed by Massa on lap 51,

On lap 56 Heidfeld slowed with a hydraulic problem and retired, while Trulli made his second stop from fifth place, while Webber made his final stop on lap 59.

At lap 60 the order was Hamilton leading Alonso by 1.8 seconds followed 13.4 seconds further back by Massa, with Raikkonen within a second, followed by Kovalainen, Rosberg, Webber, Trulli, Vettel and Fisichella in tenth.

On lap 60 Trulli passes Webber to take over seventh place, the next lap Webber attempts to repass Trulli into the first corner, but overshoots and passes through the grass and maintains his position behind Trulli.

On lap 66 Davidson passes Button for 12th place.

On lap 69 Nico Rosberg pulling off on the main straight from sixth place with the rear-end of his Williams-Toyota on fire.

On lap 71 Vitantonio Liuzzi pulled into the pits and retired.
