Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton continued the McLaren domination that was seen in Monte Carlo in the first practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The Spaniard was two-tenths of a second faster than the British novice after the first 90 minutes, an impressive showing from Hamilton given that he has never seen the Montreal track. The pair were nearly four-tenths of a second ahead of the two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa.

Mark Webber gave the Red Bull team a boost with fifth fastest ahead of Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella and BMW's Nick Heidfeld. Ralf Schumacher showed well in the session, amid rumours of his imminent replacement at Toyota, to be eighth, ahead of David Coulthard in the second Red Bull, Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato in the two Super Aguris and Jarno Trulli's Toyota.

Jenson Button was 13th ahead of Heikki Kovalainen, Alexander Wurz's Williams, Scott Speed and Williams test driver Kazuki Nakajima.

Next up was Rubens Barrichello in the second Honda ahead of Tonio Liuzzi (Toro Rosso), the two Spykers and BMW's Robert Kubica, who had technical problems.

The order is expected to shuffle somewhat in the afternoon session.
