The Friday morning session in Brazil resulted in Mark Webber setting the fastest time of the 90 minutes, four-tenth ahead of Rubens Barrichello's Brawn and Webber's team mate Sebastian Vettel. The two McLarens of Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton were next in the session that was disrupted by a small rain storm after about an hour.

Kazuki Nakajima was sixth for Williams ahead of World Championship leader Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg's Williams Adrian's Sutil's Force India and the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

Jarno Trulli was 11th in his Toyota ahead of Nick Heidfeld's BMW Sauber, the Toro Rosso of Sebastien Buemi, who spun off. Robert Kubica was 14th ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso, Tonio Liuzzi, Toyota stand-in Kamui Kobayashi, Jaime Alguersuari and Romain Grosjean, who went off and exploded a polystyrene block at one point, bringing out a red flag.
