The morning session for the Hungarian GP resulted in a 1-2 for Ferrari with Felipe Massa three-tenths of a second faster than Kimi Raikkonen. The two McLarens of Heikki Kovalianen and Lewis Hamilton were next up, with Fernando Alonso fifth fastest, ahead of Timo Glock, Robert Kubica, Nelson Piquet, Nick Heidfeld and Jarno Trulli.

Outside the top 10 were the two Red Bulls of Mark Webber and David Coulthard and Sebastien Bourdais's Toro Rosso. These were followed by the two Hondas of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, the Williams-Toyotas of Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima and the two Force Indias of Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella. Sebastian Vettel ended up last, after pulling off and parking in the middle of the session.
