Kimi Raikkonen does not have much hope of winning the World Championship this year but that does not mean he is not going to try. The Finn was fastest in the morning session on Friday at the Chinese Grand Prix ahead of Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton. The Fab Four were back together again, separated by two-tenths of a second and that suggests that the action is going to be intense this weekend even without any external influences that may come along in the course of the day as the FIA Stewards consider the "case" of Lewis Hamilton from Mount Fuji.

The best of the rest on this occasion was Nico Rosberg in his Williams-Toyota , who was ahead of Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber and the Toyota of Jarno Trulli. Giancarlo Fisichella was eighth fastest ahead of Kazuki Nakajima, who had been drafted in by Williams for the day, while Nick Heidfeld completed the top 10.

Heikki Kovalainen was 11th ahead of Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

Down at the back were Takuma Sato, Tonio Liuzzi, Mark Webber, Anthony Davidson, Sebastian Vettel and the two Spykers of Sakon Yamamoto and Adrian Sutil.
