The Finn's Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa was third quickest, just a few hundredths shy of Kimi and Fernando Alonso completed the top four with a lap that was four-tenths slower than Hamilton.
On this occasion it was the Williams-Toyota team that was first of the chasers with Nico Rosberg fifth, three-tenths behind Alonso and just ahead of the BMWs of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. Alexander Wurz did better than usual with the eighth best lap , which was six-tenths clear of Ralf Schumacher's factory Toyota, which was just ahead of Rubens Barrichello's Honda, Jarno Trulli in the second works Toyota and Anthony Davidson in the Super Aguri-Honda.
Renault was as usual not going for times in the first session with Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella 13th and 14th ahead of Jenson Button's Honda, the Super Aguri of Takuma Sato and the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and David Coulthard. Next up was Scott Speed in the Toro Rosso and then Adrian Sutil's Spyker, while Tonio Liuzzi did not get a clear run in his Toro Rosso and so ended up secondd-to-last, but still ahead of Christijan Albers.
Hamilton, Alonso and Coulthard all had off-track moments but no serious damage was done.
