F1 steels itself for 2002

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER has declared himself confident about Ferrari's technological assault on the 2002 world championship already, with the 2001 season yet to draw to a close.

The German has been heavily involved in the testing of Bridgestone tires and new equipment for the 2002 season at Fiorano this week - so busy, in fact, that he missed his brother's wedding! - and professed to be entirely satisfied with the results after dropping the lap record.

"I am very happy with the work we have done this week," said Michael. "It's been a while that we wanted to try something revolutionary and we did it with the new gearbox. Given the first results we have achieved with new components - and the gearbox was the not the only new thing we tried, I am optimistic about next year."
