Panis on top at Silverstone

FRENCHMAN Olivier Panis topped the times in the second day of testing at Silverstone as he outpaced 18 rivals.

In a major test, 19 drivers took to the track and British American Racing's Panis was quicker than Mika Hakkinen with a lap time of one minute and 22.809 seconds.

Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello was the third fastest driver ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya with Michael Schumacher fifth ahead of Canadian Grand Prix winning brother Ralf.

Jordan's Jarno Trulli, who topped the times on Tuesday, was seventh quickest ahead of young German Andre Lotterer who was handed another chance in the Jaguar in the absence of Eddie Irvine.

Darren Turner was the ninth quickest driver of the day for McLaren ahead of Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa and Sauber's Kimi Raikkonen.

British Formula Three Championship leader Takuma Sato was given a rare run-out with BAR and 12th fastest, with Luciano Burti (Prost), Mark Webber (Benetton) and Enrique Bernoldi (Arrows) behind him.

Arrows' Jos Verstappen was three-thousandths of a second slower than his team-mate Bernoldi, while Prost's Jean Alesi, Jordan's Ricardo Zonta and Giancarlo Fisichella of Benetton at the bottom of the times.
