Hakkinen fastest at Silverstone
Two-time champion Hakkinen clocked a fastest time of one minute, 22.323 seconds, 0.186 seconds quicker than David Coulthard as the pair tested their traction control set-ups ahead of the next race in Barcelona.
Frenchman Olivier Panis was third quickest for British American Racing, as he put in 62 laps to evaluate tires. Panis' quickest lap was 0.33 seconds slower than Hakkinen, while Canadian Jacques Villeneuve was fourth fastest.
Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen was fifth quickest, with Williams pair Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya sixth and seventh.
Colombian Montoya summed up the problems with the weather as drivers had to also contend with a driving wind.
Montoya said: "It's not been an easy test, as we had a few problems and the weather hasn't been good. We have to look forward now to a successful weekend in Barcelona and after that we are going to have further tests to sort out a few problems."
Brazilian Luciano Burti completed his final five laps for Jaguar after announcing that he will drive for Prost in the Spanish Grand Prix on April 29.
