JUNE 26, 2000
The 2001 calendar
THE FIA World Motor Sport Council met in Warsaw, Poland, last week and agreed a 17-race schedule for the 2001 FormulaŹ1 World Championship. There are no real surprises with all the same races as this year although the order has been shuffled to make the calendar a little more logical. This had resulted in the Malaysian GP being moved to the middle of March so that teams can go straight from Australia to Kuala Lumpur. There are slight risks in the date as it falls at the end of the Spring monsoon season. The British Grand Prix has been moved back from its disastrous April date and will now take place in the middle of May, which means that the European GP at the Nurburgring can now be held at the end of June when the weather will be much better in the Eifel Mountains. The season will end in Japan on October 14, a week earlier than this year.
The only race which has been nominated provisionally is Silverstone which has to give details to the next World Council of how it intends to avoid the same kind of traffic problems and provide details about compensation for the fans who missed the action this year. In addition the track must make a number of safety changes. If these conditions are not met by the time of the next World Council meeting on October 4 the race will be dropped from the calendar.
