McLaren's Engineering Director is Paddy Lowe, an engineering graduate from Cambridge University in 1984. In 1987 Paddy (who was born on 8th April 1962) joined Williams as the joint Head of Electronics, the team keen to improve its active suspension development programme. This proved to be a lengthy process but in the end it was a great success, helping Nigel Mansell to run away with the World Championship in 1992. This led to rival teams looking to find the secrets of the FW14B and Lowe was headhunted by McLaren and lured to Woking to be in charge of the research & development department in 1993. For eight years he ran the R&D department, which later became known as the Vehicle Technology department. In 2001, he was appointed Chief Engineer - Systems Development, working on the specification and development of the race programme for the MP4-20.

In May 2005 Lowe was appointed Engineering Director, taking responsibility for all of the engineering departments within McLaren Racing.

Paddy Lowe was hired by Williams to help the team with He has remained at McLaren ever since and became chief engineer of systems development and in April 2005 was appointed chief engineer of the entire team.
